있다 / 없다

Quick answer: 있다 / 없다 means there is / there is not — also to have / not have.

How to form it

있어요 = 있다 · 없어요 = 없다

In Korean: 있어요 = 있다 없어요 = 없다

What to know

Korean does not use 이다 for existence. 있다 covers both there is and I have, and its opposite is a separate word, 없다 — not 안 있다. Say 없어요, never 안 있어요.

Examples

  • 편의점이 있어요.
    There is a convenience store.
  • 약국이 없어요.
    There is no pharmacy.
  • 저는 우산이 있어요.
    I have an umbrella.
