-는지 알다/모르다

Quick answer: -는지 알다/모르다 means whether, where, what — a question folded inside another sentence.

How to form it

Verb → -는지 · adjective with no final consonant → -ㄴ지 · adjective with final consonant → -은지 · noun → 인지

In Korean: 동사 → -는지 형용사 받침 X → -ㄴ지 형용사 받침 O → -은지 명사 → 인지

What to know

You already know 어디에 있어요? — a direct question. Put it inside -는지 아세요? and it becomes a question you may ask a stranger, because you are asking whether they know rather than demanding the answer. The question word stays where it is: 어디에 있는지, not 있는지 어디에.

Examples

  • 영화관이 어디에 있는지 아세요?
Do you know where the cinema is?
  • 화장실이 몇 층인지 몰라요.
I do not know which floor the toilet is on.
  • 매장이 어디인지 물어봐요.
Ask where the shop floor is.
