-는 편이다

Quick answer: -는 편이다 means tends to be — you lean that way, without claiming it flatly.

How to form it

Verbs → -는 편이다 · adjectives without a final consonant → -ㄴ 편이다 · with one → -은 편이다

In Korean: 동사 → -는 편이다 형용사 받침 X → -ㄴ 편이다 형용사 받침 O → -은 편이다

What to know

Korean rarely states a personality flatly. 저는 급해요 sounds like a fixed fact about you; 저는 급한 편이에요 says «I lean that way», which is both softer and more accurate. Use it for anything about yourself or someone present.

Examples

  • 저는 급한 편이에요.
    I tend to be impatient.
  • 다나카 씨는 꼼꼼한 편이에요.
    Tanaka tends to be meticulous.
  • 저는 조용한 편이에요.
I am on the quiet side.
