-(으)ㄴ/는 척하다

Quick answer: -(으)ㄴ/는 척하다 means pretending — it looks that way but it is not.

How to form it

Verb, present → -는 척하다 · adjective or past → -(으)ㄴ 척하다

In Korean: 동사 지금 → -는 척하다 형용사·지난 일 → -(으)ㄴ 척하다

What to know

«그렇지 않은데 그런 것처럼 보이게 하다»입니다. 그래서 좋은 뜻으로는 잘 안 쓰이고 허세와 짝을 이룹니다. 2급의 -는 것 같다는 «내 짐작»이고, -는 척하다는 «남을 속이는 짓»입니다. 이 둘을 바꿔 쓰면 뜻이 완전히 달라집니다.

Examples

  • 모르면서 아는 척했어요.
I did not know, but I acted as if I did.
  • 괜찮은 척하지 마세요.
Do not pretend you are all right.
  • 못 들은 척했어요.
I acted as if I had not heard.
