-게 되다

Quick answer: -게 되다 means to come to be — it happened, rather than you chose it.

How to form it

Stem + 게 되다 · same form after any stem

In Korean: 어간 + 게 되다 받침과 상관없습니다

What to know

This is how Koreans tell the story of how something started — not I decided but it came about. Using -기로 했어요 (I decided) where a Korean would use -게 됐어요 sounds oddly forceful about small things.

Examples

I watched Korean dramas and ended up learning Korean.
  • 친척이 서울에 있어서 오게 됐어요.
I have a relative in Seoul, so I came to be here.
