-(으)라고 하다
Quick answer: -(으)라고 하다 means told me to — reporting an order or a request.
How to form it
No final consonant → -라고 하다 · final consonant → -으라고 하다
In Korean: 받침 X → -라고 하다 받침 O → -으라고 하다
What to know
The plain -다고 in 13-1 reported a statement. An order takes a different shape — -(으)라고 — and the polite 주세요 or 하세요 of the original disappears: 「일찍 오세요」 becomes 「일찍 오라고 했어요」. Do not try to keep the politeness inside the reported part.
Examples
- 내일 일찍 오라고 했어요.They told me to come early tomorrow.
- 메모를 확인하라고 했어요.They told me to check the note.
- 답장을 보내라고 했어요.They told me to send a reply.
